WAND (Media Lab Europe - Trinity College Dublin) - 2002/2003

< WAND (Wireless Ad hoc Network for Dublin) was designed to become a testbed for new locative and
mobile application. A series of small PCs with 802.11b antennas have been connected through ad hoc
routing protocols and installed on lamp post in the city centre of Dublin. Various partners of the project,
including Intel, BBC and Eircom were meant to develop applications to test in a real world environment.
While Media Lab Europe and BBC have dropped the project in 2003, Trinity College Dublin has continued
to work on the implementation of the network within the sub-project CARMEN.

For this project I conducted an ethnographic study aimed to inform the development of new applications,
suited for the socio-cultural characteristics of the area where the network was being implemented. >
